Circa 1950’s Large HOPI Armbands (masmi)
Large Green Mineral painted Hopi armbands.
Circa 1950.
Very thick leather.
Each strip is about 4.5 inches wide and each armband would be about 4.25 inches in diameter.
Pretty much the largest I have seen and the only ones with this wonderful green/turquoise color.
I would think the thick leather is commercial.
There are soft thinner leather 'cuffs' sewn in the end of each armband.
The armbands appear to be tied with hand tanned deerskin.
The primitive exterior stitching work just adds to the overall look.
The texture and color difference between the actual leather band and the inner cuff also offers a very appealing distinction to the set.
I really like the physical size of the armbands which seem to match the rather portly size of the average adult Hopi and could be worn on the upper arm, just above the elbow, or as a cuff on the wrist.
Condition is remarkable for their age and amount of use.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
