    Description

    Fine antique 19th century, c1862, Civil War era, 1/4 Plate ambrotype with Gutta Percha Thermoplastic case depicting a one
    Francis Fisher Crosby (1848-1916) of Portland, Maine
    .  A brilliant image showing a well dressed young lady in full length gown with a very slender waistline.  The girl looks to be around 14 to 16 in the photo which would date this right around 1862.  Accompanied mid 20th century typed note identifies the girl as “Their daughter Francis Fisher Crosby (b. 1848, d. 1916) married Alfred H. Berry. D. 1923”.  The “their daughter” referred to on the paper is William Lee Crosby of Bath, Maine and his wife Martha Riggs Fisher.  The typed paper was transcribed by Francis Fisher Crosby’s grandson V.L. Berry in the 1930s which was made evident in typed note that came with this and a mid 19th century Gouache portrait of Crosby’s father which is currently available for sale in our eBay store.  I was able to reference the young woman through an online search and found her to be listed as being born on May 4, 1847 in Arrowsic, Sagadahoc, Maine and dying March 16, 1916 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine at the age of 68 years old.  The ambrotype is housed in its original Gutta Percha case which is in immaculate condition.
    Ambrotype and case are in Near Fine overall condition; very well preserved and a stunning example of a mid 19th century ambrotype.  The image is clean and free of cracking, soiling, breaks or damage.  The case is almost pristine with only two small knicks to the exterior corners and some gentle soiling (see photos).  The hinges and clasp are strong and free of play and the velvet pillow interior is free of pitting, fading, rips or tears.  A brilliant antique quarter plate identified ambrotype thet displays tremendously.
    Ambrotype measures 3 1/2” x 2 7/8”.  Case measures 3 7/8” x 3 1/2” x 7/8” thick.
